Rosalie & Matthew…
Everyone wants to get married somewhere beautiful don’t they! How about using the stunning backdrop of Norway’s snow capped mountains and waterfalls, whilst taking a trip up the river in a very cool boat with family and friends?! Well Rosalie & Matthew who both met in Brighton, decided they would hold two weddings.. one in Somerset and this wedding blogged today in Hardanger Tingrett, Norway.
Here Noel their photographer tells us about his thoughts of the day, followed by the bride Rosalie on what they planned and what was their highlights from the day…
Hold on to your hats everyone as this one is EPIC!!!

Why do you love this wedding…
Rosie and Matthew are lovely people and we got on really well and we have become good friends. It was also an amazing opportunity for me to shoot a wedding in a beautiful country.

Favourite details of the day…
The tiny court house where the ceremony was held outside under a tree (Very Rosie and Matthew!). Also being able to shoot the court house from the boat as we sailed off nestled in the beautiful landscape with mountains in the background.

Favourite moment of the day…
Sailing down Hardanger Fjord to the court house and being surrounded by the most amazing scenery I have ever seen. Snow capped mountains with waterfalls falling down to tiny villages at the bottom. The sense of awe I felt that day has still not left me! It really was one of the most awesome moments of my life.

Tell us how you met and got engaged…
We met in 2009 in Brighton where, after knowing each other as friends for some time, a few hints and matchmaking attempts from our mutual friends resulted in us embarking on a long distance relationship. We both quickly decided long distance was not for us, and decided to move to Norway together where Mathew had work as an arborist. A few years later our beautiful daughter Erin was born.
Mathew had planned to propose in an extremely soppy romantic setting (the exact plan we will never know as it never reached that point!) and was waiting for the engagement ring to arrive from the UK, when instead one week before Erin was born (16th March 2013) he proposed at 3am in the morning in bed!
We are sure any women who has been pregnant or any man who has witnessed pregnancy hormones will understand why it happened like this. But for those who need further explanation, Mathew decided that instead of carrying on the guise that he wasn’t the marrying type until the perfect romantic moment presented itself (which we now know becomes even more rare once a baby arrives!) that it felt right to seize one of the last moments alone together to propose, an act that also turned out to be very effective in calming those pregnancy hormones!

What was your theme for the wedding day…
We wanted our wedding to be simple, intimate, eco-friendly and affordable. We also wanted to include our family and friends both in Norway and in England but without expecting all our guests to fly to one venue, it seemed a little hypocritical to want an environmentally conscious wedding but fly all the guest to the venue!
So two weddings were planned! The venues are the best way to describe our theme – natural, rural, beautiful landscapes, The hardanger Fjord in Norway and Rural Somerset UK.

The settings were personal for different reasons; The Hardanger fjord in the west coast of Norway (where Mathew’s grandmother was from) was chosen for a small wedding and for the official registry. Then, back in Somerset, UK (where Rosalie is from), a larger celebration and blessing was held at Fenny Castle tea rooms, ending the night with a bonfire party back at Avalon Permaculture Gardens (Rosalie’s father’s organic small holding).

What was your favourite part of the day…
In Norway it was the time spent on the fjord boat that took our guests and us to the wedding and back. It was a delightful way to travel with stunning backdrops and a boat packed full of very special guests!
Special details from the day…
As part of the UK ceremony there was a chance for our guests to offer us a blessing, this will always remain the most heart warming part of the day, feeling the love and support from everyone, something that is rare when you live abroad and are not often face to face with the people you love!

What was it like working with Noel…
Amazing from start to finish, we feel so lucky to have had such a talented, truly unique and down to earth photographer such as Noel. I am probably a hard client to please being a photographer myself, the worse kind of client, I expected a lot! It was important for me to be able to completely let go and not worry at all about capturing the day.
Commissioning Noel was by far the best decision, I felt very happy knowing he was there with all his creativity and talent! We also both feel so happy to have worked with Noel, as the photographs he takes are very distinctive and in our opinion show how wedding photography can be artistic and creative!

Advice to any couples about to get married…
Get Noel to be the photographer, it was money well spent and the best investment we made! It is also, what we realize now, the part which will continue to bring us joy and memories for what we plan to be a long-lasting lifetime together :)) When we are old and our memories fail us the photos will still be there to remind us and the grandchildren of when it all started!
For all those brides who naturally want everything to be perfect and will stay up very late the night before worrying and working (well I did anyway, doing silly things like trying to find the wire to tie the bridesmaids flowers,) relax and trust that many details will take care of themselves, not everything has to be planned!
Also putting it all into perspective is a good thing to do, knowing that the most important thing isn’t actually the wedding itself but the commitment being made and the years to come after the wedding day. Wedding planning can be very stressful, keep sight of why you are doing it and if you are on a budget like we were, be realistic of how much you can take on yourself in those days leading up to the wedding!
A huge congratulations Rosalie and Matthew and thanks to Noel for sharing these utterly smashing photos with us! To find out more about Noel and his photography, click here
