Fun Wedding DIY Ideas…

Today the lovely Alice from wedding prop and styling company Fleur De Lace, shares with us a fun and easy wedding decor DIY… Paper Leaf Garlands. Over to Alice to tell us more…

Alice…

I’m delighted to share with you this DIY on how to create an alternative foliage look. Deck the walls, create a backdrop or table runner. If you don’t have the machine to get your sew on, use hot glue instead!

What you need…

Sewing Machine and thread, paper, pencil, scissors and string.

Instructions:

1. Layer the paper and make a stencil so that you can draw around your leaf shape and cut out a few layers at a time.

2. Fold the leaves so you have a 3D effect. You can fold them in wads to save time. I pinched up to ¾ of the way up the leaf.

3. Set the sewing machine to a wide zigzag.

4. Sew in a straight line with your zigzag stitch up the string, adding the leaves at regular intervals.

5. You could sew to any length you want. I used around 30 leaves for each meter of garland.

The stitched string makes an awesome raw look. Hope you have fun, and you could use any shape and any colour.

Flower Moon Party…

A few weeks back the lovely Sharon Cooper Photography attended Elmore Court’s Flower Moon Party; an evening to celebrate their recent renovations which include 8 new beautifully decorated bedrooms, plus a stylish bridal pad in the Coach House.

Elmore has been in the Guise family for over 750 years and it’s Anselm Guise, the current heir who transformed the estate from a private family home that needed work, into the stylish bohemian wedding venue it is today.  With his background of co-founding the Glade Festival and his wife Sarah being a co-founder of The Secret Garden Party, they have found the perfect alignment of being a great party pad but with all the luxury needs you would want for your big day.

I personally LOVE visiting Elmore; the incredible house, picture perfect grounds and the amazing team are everything you want from a cool wedding venue… a real home from home. Today we have this gorgeous wedding to share with you; the quirky wedding of Holly and Louise which took place at The Hide in Sheffield.

This super fun city wedding was a real family affair and was filled with laughter, street food, doughnuts and dancing…

Tell us how you met and got engaged…

We met at school when we were 11! After school we lost touch and reconnected a few years ago via facebook after discovering we had both developed a love of snowboarding. We went out a few times as friends then one night, we went out and something just felt different. I don’t know what was in the drinks but we both say it was as if someone had just flicked a switch! Within weeks Louise was spending all her time with me and the kids and moved in ‘officially’ a year later.

What were your main hopes for the day…

The weather was a huge bonus! Getting married between Christmas and New Year we expected rain… or snow but we had one of those beautiful sunny winter’s days. It was absolutely freezing though but we got some fantastic pictures!!

Delicious Summer Ice Cream Recipe…

Today the lovely Natasha from Nevie Pie Cakes shares with us this fab ice cream recipe… Toasted Oatmeal Ice Cream.

In this weather its the perfect summer treat… Im so hungry even looking at these photos!!

This is a recipe I used to make as a teenager, it is from an old Marks and Spencer cookbook that I still treasure.

It sounds unusual, but it is delicious, and you can fool yourself into believing that it is healthy, as it contains oats! The oats and sugar turn into praline, and give the ice cream a gorgeous nutty, toffee taste. You must really watch the oat/sugar mixture while it is under the grill, as it burns very easily!

I had intended to make use of my ice cream maker, but it had lain idle for so long in the back of a cupboard that the liquid in the freezer bowl had started to leak. So I used the old fashioned ‘taking it out of the freezer regularly and beating it’ method. You only need to do this three or four times, but just make sure that the ice cream is semi-frozen when you do, or it won’t be effective.

Try adding the ice cream to some chocolate cookies – they make the perfect ice cream sandwich!

Alternative, Cool Bridal Style…

Today we have this cool, edgy skateboard themed bridal shoot to share with you which took place along the Plymouth coastline.

Margo from Margo R Photography and the team want to create a fresh, youthfully shoot to show that you really can wear what you want on your wedding day… do it in your own style and still look ace. It’s becoming more and more popular for brides to chose a non-traditional wedding dress and I love the copper sequins against the beautiful red blooms. Plus the bride is wearing DM’s… defiantly a girl after my own heart! ;)

I have always wanted to do something different using the style I love which is different than your classical wedding, yet alternative and elegant.

I also wanted to use alternative models because I feel they are rarely featured in South West bridal magazines and blogs, and I have many friends who like this style and are planning weddings, but they find very little inspiration from modern bridal magazines and blogs.

Where The Wild Things Rave Party…

Wedding and event venue Dewsall Court in Herefordshire has an amazing reputation for excellent service, beautiful grounds and serving delicious locally sourced food; so when we found out they were hosting a ‘Where The Wild Things Rave‘ party, we wanted to find out more.

It promised to be a summer night of adventure, discovery, feasting and raving… a night of immersive dinning, music and entertaining. Chase cocktails curated by mixologist Thom Williams would be served alongside the 5 course dinner which included pigeon cooked over apple wood, dandelion, mint, molasses and pork crackling AND a blackcurrant jelly fluff pudding with elderflower and angelica cream, ginseng and ginger root crunch… oh MY!!!

The lovely Binky and Sally from Binky Nixon Photography went to experience the evening and from the feedback I’ve received they LOVED every minute of it… I had no doubts that it would be anything less than perfect from the Dewsall team. Over to Binky to tell us more about it…

Shan + Rob tied the knot at in Camden and afterwards took a boat ride down to their reception venue Shoreditch Platform. It was all about simplicity, family, friends and music… partying till the early hours!

Colourful, Flower Filled Day…

Today I have a very special wedding to share with you; Lizzie + Joe’s colourful, handmade, flower filled wedding in Presteigne, Wales.

The bride Lizzie is Creative Director of Early Hours; an innovative London florist team who create incredible floral installations for some super cool venues across the city and also for couples that are looking for something really unique and creative for their own wedding day.

We’ve been lucky to work closely with the Early Hours team over the past few years; working on some amazing projects and photo shoots that have gone and to be featured on some of the most leading wedding editorial and blogs across the world. Not only do I find Lizzie herself totally awe-inspiring, she is a total sweetheart and has become a great friend.

Lizzie has always looked outside of the box with her creations, so we knew the design for their wedding day was always going to be spectacular… and it was! It was like some magical flower and colour bomb explosion; with ribbon tied chairs and tree table centres, rainbow forest of hand painted birch trees, balloon filled ceilings, flower filled baths and fairy dust and lucky pennies for the guests… An epic rainbow wonderland!

From the moment I met these two I knew we were a match! I loved their sense of adventure and new there wedding would be little bit different! They are so relaxed and fun and their wedding was the same.

I loved the prep venue so much, it was like a photographers dream! Coloured houses, cacti, a pool; all set in a botanical garden and the bridesmaids prep outfits were so cute! Tropical shorts and glittery tops – I was in heaven! The wedding venue was just as beautiful and they had an outdoor ceremony and outdoor first dance, which i actually think everyone should do! Weather permitting ;)

The food was out of this world, they kindly treated me to the same 5 course dinner and it was the best wedding food I’ve ever had! The dessert was very Heston …

I loved how easy going and fun loving both Amber and Simon were. They just had their nearest and dearest and it showed. All the thought they’d put into every detail and all the colours!!

Simon had the inside of his beautiful suit embroided with the words “You really got me” from the Kinks’ song.  Also the fact that although neither of them are local to Brighton, they love the city so much they decided to get married here.

When Georgie contacted me nearly 2 years ago, saying she wanted an Alternative Wedding Photographer, I knew we were  match made in heaven. She saw my style before I was even sure what my style was! As the day came closer and we met up at the stunning Lyde Court in Herefordshire I got ridiculously excited about shooting hers and Andy’s wedding.

Lyde Court have managed to clean the barn up JUST ENOUGH to smarten it for weddings but have very cleverly kept it rustic and un tampered enough to preserve all its charm. It is a delightful place and I can highly recommend it.

Favourite details of the day…

The magical quality of Lyde Court, its almost Harry Potteresqe! The vibe of Georgie’s styling matched it so well. I had a ball shooting their group pictures and the speeches were the funniest I have heard!!

Inspiration…

The weddings and the couples that I love to shoot are riotous, rambunctious, explosions of spirited creativity. More people are growing confident enough to move away from traditions that mean little to them, re-working ceremonies and celebrations towards something that’s more reflective of them as a couple and their connection to community… and let’s be honest, are way more fun & memorable too.

When Cherelle from Perfectly Planned 4 You and I got together to discuss this shoot we immediately bonded over our shared love of Hackney, our neighbourhood. We adore it’s diversity and independent spirit, it’s mix of people from all over just rubbing along, doing things their own way. So over drinks at our favourite pub The Star, we gleefully plotted our dream Hackney Wedding. It would be all about the joy. The bright colour, ALL THE COLOUR. Diversity. Smashing stereotypes. A bit like a Pride after-party.

Lizzie from Wedding Yurts…

There’s so much beauty all around us during Spring and Summer, that it’s no surprise that so many couples take inspiration from the natural world at this time of year. Here are just a few of my styling ideas that are perfect for spring and summer, plus a recipe for a rather fabulous cocktail that your guests will love, whenever you serve it.

Firstly, let’s talk styling. When I’m on the road with Wedding Yurts, my travelling wedding venue, I love to use seasonal and local delights to decorate our handcrafted yurts. During spring and summer, the choice is literally endless but here are some of my favourite ideas:

Of course you have to include masses of seasonal flowers and there are plenty of homegrown varieties around in spring and summer. Your florist or stylist will be able to advise you, so choose what’s naturally perfect rather than using blooms that have been forced or imported. Nothing beats British peonies, ranunculus, scented stocks and narcissi! Don’t forget to consider using spring blossom or foliage and both are great options if you’re on a budget.

Seasonal menus are another must-have, so talk to your caterers to make the most of the best fresh produce. Baby vegetables and early salads are great when the weather gets warmer; …

Glastonbury 2017…

Ahh wonderful Glastonbury… its been over 12 years since I last saw your wonders (yikes, am I really that old?!)

I have always been a festival girl at heart – I love everything about it from the music, to the food, the fashion, the diversity, the nightlife to the wonderful corners filled with art installations and festival parades.

I spent most of my twenties hitting the festival scene but when I turned thirty I got married to Lee and a year later we were parents; sadly my good old festival days were behind me!  This was until 2015 when some mates and I got drunk at Christmas and on a whim booked Wilderness tickets; we left the kids with our parents and spent the weekend eating great food, covered in glitter and dancing till dawn in the Valley… we had an incredible time and my love for festivals was reborn!
